The world’s automotive capital, Detroit, served as host to this year’s edition of This was an appropriate venue given the ever expanding adoption of OSM by industry and keen interest in autonomous vehicle navigation. A continuing trend is increasing participation by the business ecology that has grown up around OSM (ourselves included). While some are uncomfortable with OSM going “corporate”, it is exciting to experience the increasing pace at which innovation is blossoming around OSM.

01 Oct: Discovering requirements for a Resilient Islands mobile app: a collaboration between The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and American Red Cross (ARC)

A series of workshops were conducted in Grenada to identify requirements for native mobile apps to help Caribbean Island communities better prepare for and recover from hazards and disasters with ecosystem-based adaptations. A team comprised of TNC and ARC representatives from across the Eastern Caribbean and US met with government representatives and members of coast communities to set goals for a mobile app, identify target users and define priority features.

A contingent of our team recently attended the 2018 State of The Map International Conference in Milan, Italy. Attendance covered the spectrum in the OSM community, from original die hard individual contributors to more recent corporate contributors — it was an interesting mix that came with a bit of tension at times. With three of us in attendance, we were able to cover most of the sessions over the weekend (+Monday). This post includes a few of our takeaways from the conference.
